Quick answers

Who does Proud Counseling work with?

LGBTQ+ adults for individual therapy. If couples, families, or teenagers are what you're looking for, that's not the focus of my practice — but I'm happy to refer you to trusted LGBTQ+-affirming colleagues who do that work beautifully. If you're a Queer adult looking for a therapist with a deep understanding of your experience, you're in the right place.

What states does Proud Counseling serve?
California and South Carolina. All sessions are over video, so as long as you're physically located in one of those states, we're good to go. No commute required.

Does Proud Counseling accept insurance?
Private pay only — I don't bill insurance directly. I provide a monthly superbill you can submit to your insurance for potential out-of-network reimbursement. I'm also a contracted Lyra Health provider. If your employer offers Lyra as a benefit, your sessions may be fully covered with no copay — even though I don't appear in Lyra's directory. Reach out to me directly and we'll confirm your coverage on your free consultation call.

How much does therapy at Proud Counseling cost?
Sessions are $200 for 45 minutes. Monthly superbills provided for out-of-network reimbursement. Lyra Health clients may be fully covered.

What issues does Proud Counseling specialize in?
Queer-affirmative therapy for adults navigating coming out, gender identity and transition, identity exploration, dating and relationships, life transitions, and general personal growth. I also pay close attention to how intersecting identities — race, gender, religion, disability, and more — shape each person's experience.

What kind of therapy approach does Proud Counseling use?
Queer-affirmative therapy as the foundation, with CBT woven in for practical tools. Mostly talk therapy — real conversations, no jargon, no performing.

Is Proud Counseling a good fit if I'm not struggling with my LGBTQ+ identity?
Absolutely. A lot of clients come to me not because they need help with being Queer — they love being Queer — but because they want a therapist who gets that part of them without needing an explanation.

Is Proud Counseling affirming of Black, Indigenous, and People of Color, immigrant, and undocumented clients?

Absolutely. Black Lives Matter. I am committed to anti-racist, culturally affirming care and deeply value working with clients across all racial and ethnic backgrounds, including Black, Indigenous, and People of Color. I also welcome and affirm immigrant and undocumented clients. Your immigration status has no bearing on your ability to receive therapy here, and your privacy is protected under HIPAA regardless of your background or status. I fully acknowledge the unearned power and privilege I carry as a white cisgender male, and I am committed to continuing to do the work to show up as an accountable ally to my clients of color and immigrant clients.

Do you provide referrals for gender-affirming medical care?

Yes. I work with many transgender and gender non-conforming clients and provide referral letters for gender-affirming medical care, including hormone replacement therapy (HRT), gender-affirming surgeries, and legal name and gender marker changes. I follow WPATH standards and make every effort to keep the process as straightforward and non-gatekeeping as possible.

How do I get started with Proud Counseling?
Schedule a free consultation — no pressure, just a conversation to see if we're a good fit.
